Hippotherapy and Therapist-Assisted Equine Services
The term “hippotherapy” comes from the Greek word “hippos” meaning horse and translated means “treatment with the help of the horse”. Hippotherapy sessions at SMRS are conducted by licensed physical therapists registered with the American Hippotherapy Association. These therapists focus on the characteristics of the horse’s walk and its relation to the human walk and how that movement can be manipulated to affect their client’s response as a treatment strategy.
At SMRS, we have contractual relationships with licensed physical, occupational and speech therapists who have advanced education and credentials demonstrating their working knowledge of the safe and effective use of the horse’s movement as a therapy strategy for clients. Therapist-assisted equine services are used as a form of therapy to achieve physical, psychological, cognitive, behavioral and communication goals.
